GLOW, A Cork Christmas Celebration, which is presented, by Cork City Council and runs every weekend until Sunday December 18 is going green this year. The initiative is being carried out by Cork City Council with support from the EPA BeGreen Scheme, and visitors to the family Christmas festival are being asked to choose the right bin with separate bins being provided for recycling, composting and general waste.

Mary Walsh, Cork City Council Environmental Awareness Officer said

“This year the organisers of the GLOW festival are delivering a greener event in an effort to reduce its environmental impact. Special bins are located on the Grand Parade around the food traders stalls and we encourage members of the Public to use the bins.

All plastic bottles and cans can go in the recycling bins, compostable packaging products and leftover food can go in the composting bin while the general waste bins are only used for items that are non composting or non recyclable.”

The GLOW festival’s friendly Green Elves will be onsite every day of GLOW to help people make the right bin choice and to answer any questions that people might have about the initiative. All bins are colour coded with the green bin for recyclable products, the orange bin for compostable products and the black bin for waste products.

All the Christmas Food Market Traders participating in GLOW have come onboard with the initiative and are only using compostable packaging to serve their produce, which in turn can be put in the composting bin along with leftover foods.

A waste audit which was taken following completion of the first weekend of GLOW, found that the GLOW Festival generated 980kg’s (almost a tonne) of waste over the three days and that 25% of waste was diverted from landfill or incineration towards recycling and composting.
We aim to improve on this each week of GLOW as people become accustomed to segregating their waste at this type of event

GLOW will take place on the following dates:

Friday December 2- Sunday December 4
Friday December 9- Sunday December 11
Friday December 16- Sunday December 18

Experience the wonder of Narnia at Bishop Lucey Park (4.30pm-8.30pm) and enjoy festive entertainment and cuisine at the Christmas Food Markets on the Grand Parade (12 noon- 8.30pm)
