Ho, Ho, Ho… Christmas Lights in Cork City to be switched on this Sunday – November 19.

The countdown to Christmas has truly begun with the announcement that the switching on of the Cork City Christmas Lights will take place on Patrick’s Street this Sunday November 19th.  Organised by Cork City Council, the Christmas Lights will be switched on by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald, with the event expected to attract large crowds.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald said

“I am really looking forward to switching on the Christmas Lights in Cork and I would encourage people to come in and support this wonderful free festive event.”

Beginning at 6.30pm on Patrick’s Street, students from The Academy of Popular Music, Ireland’s leading pop music school, will perform a selection of much loved Christmas songs including All I want for Christmas, Let it Snow Let It Snow Let it Snow, Merry Christmas Everyone and Fairytale of New York. Students from The Academy of Popular Music have previously performed on the Late Late Toy Show, the Voice of Ireland, RTE’s Daniel O’Donnell’s Christmas Special, Teen Idol Cork and Cork’s Got Talent.

The official switch on of the Christmas Lights by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Tony Fitzgerald will take place at approx. 7.15pm with rumours of a special guest appearance by Santa Claus.

Large crowds are expected at this wonderful and very popular event. There will be ISL Irish Sign Language interpretation throughout the evening.

Due to the large volume of people who annually attend the switching on of the Christmas Lights, members of the public are being asked to give themselves plenty of time to come into Cork City on Sunday. Some road closures will be in place, and normal Sunday parking restrictions will apply. Park and Ride will operate every 15 minutes from 11am-8.30pm from Black Ash to Lapps Quay.

See www.corkchristmascelebration.ie for details on parking in the city.

The switching on of the Christmas Lights will kick start the city’s seasonal celebrations as part of promotional drive by Cork City Council and the Cork Business Association to encourage people to come into the city centre and to shop locally in the lead up to Christmas.

Cork will be transformed into a festive wonderland with the opening of GLOW on Grand Parade on December 1st, which will run over the weekends leading up to Christmas, plus 20th -22nd December.

Cork’s 96FM and C103 and the Evening Echo are media sponsors of GLOW 2017.
