GLOW goes Green

Presented by Cork City Council, Glow, A Cork Christmas Celebration returns this weekend and sees Bishop Lucey Park and the Grand Parade transformed into a hive of activity with choirs, food traders, and elves. The much-loved Ferris Wheel and the Christmas Markets open on Friday at 12noon while Bishop Lucey Park opens at 4.30pm.

This year GLOW is greener than ever! All food packaging, cups, and plates supplied by our market traders are compostable, enabling GLOW to become even greener. Cork City Council are building on the success of the Greening of GLOW initiative in 2016 which saw over 30% of all waste produced at GLOW being diverted away from landfill to the more environmentally friendly composting and recycling routes.

In the first weekend of GLOW 2017, 75% of all waste was recycled and 25% was composted with no waste being sent to landfill. This is a fantastic result and paves the way for GLOW to become a zero-landfill festival.

Throughout the weekend The GLOW festival’s friendly Green Elves will be onsite every day of GLOW to help people make the right bin choice and to answer any questions that people might have about the initiative. All bins are colour coded with the green bin for recyclable products and the orange bin for compostable products.

Organised by the Cork Environmental Forum a Christmas Decoration Family Upcycling Workshop will take place on Saturday in Cork City Library from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The event which is free is suitable for children age five and older. Booking is essential contact or 083 1468064.

Throughout the weekend beautiful choral singing will take place on the Grand Parade as choirs from all over Cork sing festive songs to raise money for charity. Friday sees performances from Coláiste Cholm Junior Choir, Sac-apella, Douglas Ceoltas and Viva Voce while World as One Choir, Barony Choir, Barrack Street Youth Band, Voices of Cork and Shandon Ukulele Ensemble will perform on the Grand Parade on Saturday. There will also be choral performances on Sunday from Suzuki Violin Group, ArtLifeCulture Youth Choir and Douglas Ceoltas.
